Linux Terminal Server Workshop Print E-mail

Diploma We offer a 3 day hands on Workshop for IT Engineers interested in learning how to construct an LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) machine for use in their operations or to set up for their clients. We can provide the hardware but the students can also bring their own according to these specifications. Each class consists of 2 to 4 engineers with 1 or 2 machines that can be put to actual use in their operations.

The following is covered in the Workshop:

  • Hardware specs and preparation (RAID and assessing minimum specifications)
  • Distributions that support LTSP
  • Install and configure Linux operating system and learn about Unix basics.
  • Install basic LTSP and test.
  • Configure for advanced LTSP and test.
  • How to solve access to Windows applications.
  • LTSP with Virtualization.

The participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and should be able to construct a functioning LTSP server on various hardware configurations. The participants must however be Experienced Professional IT Engineers and no follow up training, help or service are included. These can be arranged on a case by case basis. The following are the minimum requirements for participating Engineers:

  1. 3 year education and/or experience in IT Engineering services and server administration.
  2. Understanding and /or experience of Directory services such as Active Directory from Microsoft.
  3. Understanding and/or experience with Local Area Networks and IP routing.
  4. Experience and/or understanding of the Unix operating system is preferable but not required.
Those that do not have any Unix/Linux experience might struggle but general network administration experience counts the most. We will help get the basics across but training yourself by trying out Linux before or after the workshop will be important in acquiring the skills to deal with unforeseen events. The best way to prepare is setting up VirtualBox or VMWare on your XP, Vista or Macintosh box and install any number of Linux desktops and servers in those relatively easy and safe environments. Macintosh OSX users are in fact using a Unix operating system although they are mostly insulated from the "under the hood" workings. There is however nothing to prevent them from opening the hood and taking a peak.
